Duties and Responsibilities
This internship announcement is valid for one (1) candidate who will intern in the Guided Tours Unit (GTU), Visitors Services Section. Visitors Services is part of the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications in New York City, which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Visitors Services Section interfaces directly with the general public to offer guided tours of UN Headquarters in New York and briefings with UN expert speakers, as well as a Public Inquiries counter where visitors can obtain information materials and ask questions. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in New York but could possibly be adjusted to part-time based on the availability of the successful candidate, the nature of the tasks, needs of the Units and/or Section, and the discretion of the manager. Full-time interns work five days a week (35 hours) and part-time interns work less than 34 hours a week. This is under the supervision of a staff member in the Unit within the Visitors Services Section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. This internship is unpaid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the needs of the Guided Tours Unit and Visitors Services Section, and the period during which the internship is undertaken. Under the supervision of the Chief Guided Tours, the intern will contribute to specific projects and gain practical exposure to the planning and delivery of public engagement activities at UN Headquarters. Responsibilities may include: • Support the planning and implementation of outreach, visitor engagement and special-event projects, including research, coordination, preparation of materials and follow-up. • Assist in the development of thematic tours, educational activities and other initiatives designed to enhance the visitor experience. • Gain practical exposure to the operations of the Guided Tours Unit, including how guides prepare and deliver tours, communicate complex United Nations issues to diverse audiences and contribute to an effective visitor experience. • Conduct research and contribute to communications and promotional materials, including articles, social media content, phots, videos and visual materials. • Support innovative visitor engagement initiatives, including the use of new technologies such as VR/AR and AI, and the development of revenue-generating activities and products for visitors. • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the two following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience; however, a field of study that is related to the type of internship is required. Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, is required. Familiarity with new technologies such as VR/AR, AI, and others is desirable. Ability to take photos and videos, with basic knowledge of editing and retouching is desirable. Ability to draft short articles and/or social media posts including basic design skills such as Canva, Photoshop, etc. is desirable. Knowledge of American Sign Language is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is an advantage.

The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents, or not currently in the United States on a nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa and, if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship. For internships outside the United States, interns who are not citizens of the country, permanent residents, or not currently in the country's nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a valid visa and work permit, allowing them to undertake the internship. The United Nations must ensure all applicants for an internship, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are authorized to work in the country where the internship will be undertaken, either remotely, hybrid, or on the UN-premise duty station. Before resuming an internship, the applicant must submit proof of visa and/or work authorization. Applicants who have previously served six months, in total, as an intern in one or more UN Entities in the UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern. Applicants who are children, siblings, and sons or daughters-in-law (including stepchildren, half-siblings, or stepsiblings) of an active staff member in a UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern.
