Mission and objectives

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) leads and inspires the world to achieve its shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. UNAIDS brings together the efforts of the United Nations system, governments, civil society, communities, development partners, and other stakeholders to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.

UNAIDS Office in China supports the Government of China and partners in strengthening HIV prevention, testing, treatment, care and support services; reducing stigma and discrimination; promoting health equity; and advancing South-South and triangular cooperation in global health. The office also facilitates knowledge exchange and international development cooperation, south-south cooperation under FOCAC, particularly through partnerships with the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), United Nations agencies, and partner countries in Africa and other developing regions.

Assignment context

The UNAIDS Office in China works closely with the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), government institutions, UN agencies, and international partners to advance South-South cooperation and strengthen HIV and broader global health responses. The UN Volunteer will support the development, translation, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of CIDCA-funded international cooperation projects. The volunteer will work closely with staff of the UNAIDS Office in China, CIDCA, CICETE, participating UNAIDS Country Offices, government counterparts, and other project stakeholders. The position will provide translation and interpretation support for project proposals, budgets, quarterly and annual reports, correspondence, and other project documents, translating materials submitted by UNAIDS Country Offices into Chinese and translating comments and feedback from CIDCA and CICETE into English. The incumbent will also facilitate effective communication, coordination, and project implementation among all stakeholders.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the UNAIDS Policy and Strategy Adviser, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following responsibilities:

· Provide translation, proofreading, editing, and quality assurance support for project proposals, budgets, agreements, reports, correspondence, presentations, and other project-related documents in both Chinese and English.
· Support country implementation of GDF-funded projects by tracking workplans, activities, deliverables, timelines, and reporting requirements.
· Assist in the preparation of project progress reports, monitoring updates, meeting minutes, briefing notes, presentations, and other project documentation.
· Support the organization and coordination of meetings, workshops, training programmes, study tours, high-level missions, and other activities related to South-South cooperation and global health.
· Maintain GDF-project records, databases, and documentation, and support knowledge management and information-sharing activities.
· Assist with GDF project budget monitoring, administrative follow-up, and logistical coordination for project implementation.
· Conduct background research and prepare analytical briefs and summaries on global health, HIV, South-South cooperation, and international development cooperation.
· Support communication and visibility activities to promote project achievements, lessons learned, and strategic partnerships.
· Perform other programme- and project-related duties as assigned.

Skills and experience

· Demonstrated experience in written translation and/or interpretation between Chinese and English.
· Experience in project coordination, programme management, international cooperation, or administrative support.
· Excellent drafting, editing, and communication skills in both English and Chinese.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
· Strong organizational, coordination, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
· Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.

Desirable:
· Experience working with the United Nations, other international organizations, government institutions, or development partners.
· Knowledge of global health, HIV/AIDS, South-South cooperation, and international development cooperation.
· Experience supporting donor-funded or multi-country development projects.
· Familiarity with CIDCA, CICETE, and China's international development cooperation mechanisms and programmes.
· Experience organizing international meetings, workshops, study tours, or capacity-building activities.

Living conditions

The duty station of the national UNV is in the UNAIDS Office in China located in Beijing, where high-quality public infrastructure and health services are available. It is the foremost political and cultural metropolis in China.

In general, rent for apartments in central locations is high relative to other regions in China, but the quality is good. Beijing is well served by many shopping malls, large supermarket chains and international brands. Buses and subways are the most common form of mass transportation. Metered taxis are widely available and domestic and regional travel by train and airplane is popular.
