Mission and objectives

UN Women (UNW), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women plays an innovative and catalytic role in the State of Palestine since its inception in 1997. UN Women Palestine Office focuses its activities on one overarching goal, namely, to support the implementation at the national level of existing international commitments to advance gender equality in line with the national priorities. In support of this goal, and thoroughly taking into consideration the specificities of the Palestinian context, UN Women concentrates its efforts and interventions toward the realisation of following strategic goals: Mainstreaming gender in governance, peace and security; Supporting women's economic security and rights; and Promoting women’s rights and protection against violence.

Assignment context

UN Women Palestine uses communications and advocacy to promote gender equality, highlight the experiences and leadership of Palestinian women and girls, and communicate programme results. The volunteer will support the Communications team in developing human-interest stories and written content based on interviews and programme information from Gaza and the West Bank, for use on UN Women’s website and social media platforms.

Task description

• Conduct virtual interviews with beneficiaries and partners in Gaza and the West Bank, in Arabic and/or English.
• Support the development of human-interest stories, profiles and other storytelling content.
• Draft and edit communications materials in Arabic and English.
• Identify strong story angles, key messages and quotes from interviews and programme information.
• Turn interviews and programme information into engaging web and social media content.
• Adapt stories into different formats, including website stories, social media posts, captions, quote cards and short video scripts.
• Support copywriting, editing and proofreading of communications materials.
• Contribute to communications and advocacy campaigns.

Expected outputs:

Conduct virtual interviews for and develop 2 human-interest stories based on UN Women-supported programmes in Gaza and/or the West Bank.

• Produce each story in English and Arabic.
• Prepare 2 social media adaptations for each story, including suggested captions/key quotes.

Skills and experience

Required experience
• Background or studies in communications, journalism, media, languages, digital communications or a related field (required).
• Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills in Arabic and English (required).
• Ability to identify interesting stories, key messages and strong quotes (required).
• Interest in interviewing and developing human-interest stories (required).
• Ability to write clear and engaging communications content for different audiences (required).
• Good understanding of social media and how stories can be adapted for different digital platforms (required).
• Creativity and interest in developing stories in different formats, including web, social media and short-form content (required).
• Familiarity with Canva, CapCut or other basic design/video editing tools (desirable).
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and coordinate remotely with team members (required).
