Assignment context

Every year, millions of tons of waste flood our ecosystems, threatening biodiversity, public health, and the delicate balance of our planet. From plastic pollution in oceans to illegal dumping in urban and rural areas, waste has become one of the most pressing environmental crises of our time. In response, a global citizen movement has emerged as a collective call to action: World Clean Up Day.

More than just a single day of cleanup, World Clean Up Day is a planetary movement that unites individuals, communities, organizations, businesses, and governments in a shared mission: to free the Earth from wild waste. Born from a growing global awareness, this initiative proves that change begins locally—but gains its true power when scaled internationally.

The “Mate Swell” youth movement has decided to join this initiative to contribute to the United Nations’ efforts in the fight against environmental degradation, where everyone becomes an agent of change. This year’s event is led by young people at the International Center for Training in Human Rights and Sustainable Development (C.I.F.D.H/D.D). Its mission is to empower young people to take the lead in environmental action, with the goal of fostering a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders.

On September 19, 2026, hundreds of thousands of sites will be cleaned simultaneously in over 190 countries, making this one of the largest civic mobilizations in history. Whether you’re a volunteer, a community leader, or a representative of an organization, your participation will help reduce ecological footprints while strengthening social bonds around a shared cause.

Beyond the immediate impact of removing waste, World Clean Up Day – "Mate Swell" embodies a long-term vision: a world where waste management is a collective priority, ecosystems are preserved, and future generations inherit a healthier planet. By joining this movement, you’re not just picking up litter—you’re planting the seeds of a sustainable future.

Task description

We are seeking 50 volunteers with strong experience in community organizing, event management, and environmental advocacy to support the preparation and execution of the World Clean Up Day – « Mate Swell » on 19 September 2026.

Under the supervision of the C.I.F.D.H/D.D Executive Bureau and in close collaboration with local authorities, partner NGOs, and community leaders, each volunteer will be responsible for:

1. Community Mobilization:

- Recruit at least 20 participants (individuals aged 18+) from your community.
- Organize pre-event meetings to explain the goals and logistics of the cleanup.
- Ensure diversity in participation (gender, age, social background).


2. Logistics and Planning:

- Identify and secure a cleaning site (beach, forest, street, park) in collaboration with local authorities.
- Arrange for necessary equipment (gloves, bags, safety vests, first aid kits).
- Coordinate with waste collection services for proper disposal of collected waste.


3. Promotion and Communication:

- Develop and disseminate promotional materials (posters, flyers, social media content).
- Engage local media (radio, TV, newspapers) to cover the event. (if possible)
- Create and share content on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to maximize visibility.
- Encourage participants to like, comment, share, and repost event-related content.


4. Event Execution:

- Lead the cleanup activities on 19 September 2026, ensuring safety and adherence to environmental guidelines.
- Document the event through photos and videos for reporting and promotional purposes.
- Coordinate with local authorities to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards.


5. Reporting and Evaluation:

- Submit a comprehensive report within 1 week after the event, including:
- Number of participants.
- Amount and type of waste collected.
- Photos/videos and media coverage.
- Feedback from participants and authorities.
- Recommendations for future actions.


Volunteers will receive training and guidelines from the C.I.F.D.H/D.D before the start of the assignment to ensure alignment with the organization’s standards and the United Nations’ objectives.

Skills and experience

Candidates should have:
✔ Proven experience in community organizing or event management, preferably in environmental or social initiatives.
✔ Strong leadership and teamwork skills, with the ability to mobilize and inspire others.
✔ Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in French (fluent) and English (desirable).
✔ Familiarity with social media platforms and digital tools for promotion.
✔ Knowledge of environmental issues, particularly waste management and pollution reduction.
✔ Ability to work independently and in multicultural teams.
✔ Commitment to the values of the C.I.F.D.H/D.D: Love, Defense, Development.

Previous experience in:
- Organizing community cleanups or environmental campaigns.
- Working with NGOs, local authorities, or grassroots organizations.
- Documenting events through photography or videography.
- Collaborating with media outlets for event coverage.
