Duties and Responsibilities
The desired starting date is 1 September, and the internship is for 3 months, with a possible remote start. The internship is UNPAID and interns work five days per week (full time - 40 hours). The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism, with widely recognized expertise and specialization on issues on international cooperation in criminal matters. The Southeast Asia and the Pacific region continues to be affected by drugs and crime-related risks, including the expansion and evolution of transnational organized crime and terrorism. The Regional Programme for Southeast Asia and the Pacific 2022 – 2026 is designed to address both present and emerging needs within these regions, with the ultimate objective: the rule of law in Southeast Asia and the Pacific is secured and reinforced, and vulnerable groups and communities in the region are protected from drugs and crime. Over recent years, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pacific office has experienced rapid expansion, both in terms of its portfolio, staff, and geographical reach. Its portfolio now encompasses anti-corruption, transnational organized crime, maritime crime, cybercrime, human trafficking, and environmental crimes. Drawing on regional expertise, it also leverages the knowledge and resources of its headquarters and regional office in areas such as terrorism, criminal justice, drug control, and rehabilitation. The work of the UNODC contributes to the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, developed by the Pacific Islands Forum leaders to provide common long-term approaches to critical challenges, including sustainable development and security. This is interlinked with the Boe Declaration on Regional Security and its Action Plan, endorsed by all the leaders of Pacific Island Countries, which highlights the complex nature of contemporary peace and security threats in the region, including transnational crime and cybersecurity, aiming to strengthen the Member States’ capacities and multilaterally address challenges. For more information about UNODC please visit https://www.unodc.org/ The internship will be located in the UNODC in Suva, Fiji. The intern reports to the Head of Office. Main duties will include but not be limited to: •Collecting and compiling information for analytical reports, speaking notes, background documents and other programme materials. •Conducting in-depth research and analysis on crime prevention, criminal justice, transnational organized crime and anti-corruption issues. •Preparing and formatting background documents, presentation slide decks, talking points and speeches. •Developing briefing materials and documentation for meetings and events with stakeholders, including UN agencies. •Drafting, reviewing and finalizing administrative documents such as letters, terms of reference, memos and other correspondence. •Contributing to the planning, coordination and logistics of workshops, conferences and training sessions (agenda preparation, participant lists, venue bookings, on-site support). •Drafting detailed reports, minutes and action-item logs for UNODC POFJI events and meetings. •Assisting in the creation, review and updating of social media content, webstories and press releases to enhance programme visibility and engagement. •Maintaining and updating the Office’s shared document repository and calendar to ensure all records are current and accessible. • Where relevant, interns may also undertake a specific research project aligned with the programme objectives and their academic background, with agreed deliverables to be completed during the internship period. •Perform additional tasks as required.
Qualifications/special skills
The basic education required is HS Diploma; Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Proficiency in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and online collaboration tools Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Demonstrable skills in analytical thinking, communication and research is desirable. Strong interest in issues related to anti-corruption, security, peace, justice, and/or development is desirable. Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting is desirable. Ability to perform a variety of administrative tasks is desirable. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and a strong team working capacity is desirable. Ability to design surveys, polls and other research methodologies is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
