Assignment context

This assignment supports IOM’s institutional objective to strengthen the integration of migration considerations into economic, investment and private sector engagement. The analysis will provide evidence on whether and how issues such as labour mobility, migrant workers, displacement, skills, recruitment and community impacts are reflected in existing business and investment assessments and sustainability reporting frameworks. The findings will help IOM identify gaps, demonstrate where migration is material to investment performance and social sustainability, and strengthen its engagement with governments, businesses and financial institutions.

Task description

We are looking for two Online Volunteers with experience in research and analysis and strong writing skills to support an assessment of how migration considerations are mainstreamed in business and investment-related assessments under the EU investment agenda and relevant EU sustainability reporting frameworks and directives.

The assignment will examine the extent to which migration-related issues are reflected across different sets of documents, as well as the specific ways in which migration, migrant workers, displacement, mobility and related considerations are addressed.

The Online Volunteers will be expected to:
1. Discuss and agree on the scope, research questions, methodology and parameters of the analysis;
2. Identify, review and compile relevant and credible documents and sources as guided by the Senior Partnership Officer;
3. Conduct desk-based research and systematically assess how migration-related considerations are reflected in the documents reviewed;
4. Develop and maintain an Excel database summarizing the findings for each document against agreed analytical criteria;
5. Analyse the prevalence, depth and type of migration mainstreaming across different categories of documents, identifying common approaches, gaps and emerging patterns;
6. Prepare a concise analytical report presenting the findings, including how frequently migration considerations appear, which dimensions of migration are addressed, and how they are incorporated into business, investment and sustainability assessments; and
7. Prepare a short presentation summarizing the methodology, key findings and implications of the analysis.

Throughout the assignment, the Online Volunteers will work closely with the Senior Partnerships Officer, who will provide substantive guidance, agree on the analytical framework and support the interpretation of findings.

The two Online Volunteers will jointly review and code approximately 1,150 individual assessments across two main document sets, with the workload divided between them based on an agreed methodology.

The Online Volunteers will have the opportunity to build connections with the Partnerships team at IOM Global Office in Brussels, and gain practical insight into how research and analysis on migration mainstreaming in business, investment and sustainability frameworks can support IOM’s engagement with the EU Global Gateway and related sustainability reporting and due diligence processes.

Skills and experience

- Demonstrated experience in desk research, qualitative analysis or policy analysis;
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to identify patterns, gaps and differences across large sets of documents;
- Excellent written English and ability to synthesize complex information clearly and concisely;
- Experience using Excel or similar tools to organize, code and analyse qualitative data;
- Ability to work systematically with a high volume of information and apply an agreed analytical framework consistently;
- Familiarity with migration, labour mobility, business and human rights, sustainability, responsible business conduct or investment-related issues would be an advantage;
- Previous experience with EU policies, sustainability reporting frameworks or international organizations would be an asset.
