Code for America is looking for a talented Associate Director of Government Partnerships who will secure and grow the government partnerships that allow Code for America to achieve its mission. They'll own a set of agency accounts and serve as the primary relationship lead for each, identifying opportunities, carrying them through to signed agreement, and handing off cleanly to delivery. They'll also help shape our offerings based on what they hear from partners, maintain the pitch materials and account records our teams rely on, improve how opportunities move through the pipeline, mentor colleagues, and surface market insights that drive greater impact over time.

About the role:

We're seeking a results-oriented Associate Director of Government Partnerships to expand the reach and long-term impact of Code for America's programs. This role will:

  • Own a portfolio of state and local government accounts, building strong relationships and managing opportunities from first conversation through signed agreement
  • Help shape what we offer agencies and how we pitch it, working with program, product, and engineering teams
  • Own the pitch materials and partnership infrastructure behind this work, including decks, case studies, and accurate account records

The ideal candidate has a proven track record of securing commitments and signed agreements from state and local agencies, and a working knowledge of how governments approve and execute philanthropically funded agreements. They've managed a partnership pipeline, pitched advisory and/or technology services, and navigated government decision-making to get agreements signed.

A good fit is strategic, entrepreneurial, relationship-oriented, organized enough to keep account and pipeline data current, and committed to Code for America's mission of making government services work well for the people who need them most.

This role will report to the Director of Strategic Partnerships and is expected to travel no more than 10% of the time.

Code for America is based in California and can employ those who reside full-time within the United States. This is a remote position.

In this position you will:

  • Account management and deal execution
    • Own a portfolio of state and local agency accounts, building trusted relationships across leadership and program staff
    • Develop account plans that identify partner needs, priorities, and opportunities for new or expanded work
    • Lead discovery, pitch, and scoping conversations, then write tailored proposals, SOWs, MOUs, and decks and drive follow-up
    • Lead the cross-functional path to signature across Legal, Privacy, Security, and delivery teams, and partner with the Associate Director, Business Development when work runs through procurement
    • Manage clean handoffs to delivery teams, including partner context, commitments made, and open risks, and stay engaged as the account lead after launch
  • Offering and pitch development
    • Work with program, product, and engineering teams to shape what we offer government partners, at what scope, and with what value proposition
    • Identify and qualify target agencies, and bring account-level insights back to inform offerings and priorities
    • Test new pitch approaches and share what works across the Strategic Partnerships team
  • Pitch materials and partnership infrastructure
    • Own and improve pitch materials, including decks, case studies, one-pagers, and reusable proposal language
    • Partner with Marketing and Communications on case studies and supporting materials
    • Keep account and pipeline records accurate, and provide regular updates to leadership
    • Improve the processes and templates for moving opportunities from first conversation to signature
  • Internal collaboration and ecosystem support
    • Represent the voice of government partners in product decisions, and communicate product strategy and priorities back to partners
    • Support the Development team on proposals and grant reporting tied to your accounts
    • Build relationships with civic tech organizations, advocates, and intermediaries working with the same agencies
    • Mentor colleagues on Strategic Partnerships best practices
  • Other duties as assigned
    • Engage in ad hoc projects and initiatives as the organization's needs evolve
