The World Health Organization serves as the directing and coordinating authority for public health within the United Nations system. WHO seeks to promote health, ensure everyone can attain the highest level of health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable through partnerships, people and countries.
Under a dedicated award from the Islamic Organization partner (IoP), WHO is supporting Egypt to strengthen the climate resilience and environmental sustainability of health care facilities. The work applies the WHO guidance for climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable health care facilities across selected facilities, covering energy, water and sanitation, health care waste, infrastructure and workforce readiness. It complements the regional CHE climate and health programme (2026 to 2029), in which Egypt participates as an uptake country through the national health vulnerability and adaptation assessment (H-VAA), climate-resilient WASH and air quality workstreams.
The UN Volunteer will dedicate approximately 70 per cent of working time to the facility-level resilience work in Egypt under the IoP award, and approximately 30 per cent to the CHE Unit's related workplan activities. The assignment is funded from the IoP award, which is separate from the Wellcome award financing the regional programme.
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Regional Adviser a.i., Climate Change, Health and Environment, and in coordination with the WHO Country Office in Egypt, or his or her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will:
1. Support baseline assessments of the selected health care facilities against the WHO guidance for climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable health care facilities, including data collection, entry, cleaning and quality checks.
2. Support the development of facility-level resilience improvement plans covering energy, water, sanitation, health care waste, infrastructure and workforce readiness, in consultation with facility management and Ministry of Health counterparts.
3. Support the coordination and day-to-day implementation of the Egypt health care facility resilience workplan, including administrative, technical and operational follow-up on outstanding actions.
4. Assist in the development and maintenance of tracking tools, dashboards and documentation systems for monitoring facility activities, progress, performance indicators and deliverables.
5. Support the organization of technical meetings, workshops and training activities for facility managers and national counterparts, including scheduling, materials, attendance tracking, documentation and follow-up.
6. Support the preparation of technical documents, presentations, progress reports and management updates for WHO, national counterparts and the donor, including reporting under the IoP award.
7. Liaise with health facility representatives, technical teams, service providers and other stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of planned activities.
8. Contribute to the improvement of digital tools and automated workflows that strengthen data visibility, reporting and operational efficiency.
9. Provide support (approximately 30 per cent of time) to the CHE Unit's activities in Egypt, including the national health vulnerability and adaptation assessment (H-VAA), climate-resilient WASH and air quality components.
10. Perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.
