Mission and objectives

The World Food Programme (WFP) aims to provide food assistance in emergency situations and promote peace and stability.

Assignment context

The UN Volunteer will be part of the Communications Unit of the WFP Country Office Djibouti and
will report to the Partnership Officer.
The unit supports communication activities that serve WFP’s needs in the country of assignment,
taking into account the regional communications plan and WFP’s corporate communications goals.
The purpose of the assignment is to implement the country communications plan by delivering a
range of communications activities, providing research and analysis, and prioritising effectively.
Working with minimal supervision, the UN Volunteer will be closely involved in day-to-day
communications, analytical work, and advice on less complex issues, contributing to WFP’s visibility,
reputation and fundraising.

Task description

Key Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Partnership Officer, the UN Volunteer will:

• Implement the country-specific communication work plan to maintain and enhance WFP’s
visibility and reputation and to support fundraising, in line with WFP’s regional and corporate
communications strategies.
• Conduct research and analysis in the assigned area of work, and prepare and distribute timely
information products to target audiences.
• Maintain an up-to-date contact list of journalists and media outlets, and support the regular flow
of news and information on WFP’s work to the media.
• Support implementation of the social media plan by developing content and using platforms,
networks and partners to expand coverage of WFP’s activities.
• Produce donor-specific visibility content (text, photos, video and audio) for WFP’s integrated
online platforms, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
• Monitor and analyse traditional and social media to inform the development and evaluation of
communication activities and strategies.
• Act as a point of referral for more junior team members, guiding them on more complex
analysis and queries.
• Collate outreach data and contribute to accurate, timely reports, ensuring consistency of
information presented to the media and other stakeholders.
• Support communication capacity building for WFP staff, including the design and review of
training materials, and provide advice within the area of expertise.
• Liaise with WFP colleagues and external counterparts to ensure a coherent and aligned
approach to communications.
• Follow standard emergency preparedness practices to support WFP’s rapid response at the
onset of a crisis.
• Perform other related tasks as required

Skills and experience

Minimum requirements (must haves):
– Demonstrated experience applying specialist communications techniques to strengthen
communication outputs.
– Experience providing direction and instruction to more junior colleagues within the area of
expertise.
– Proven ability to build and sustain effective relationships with media contacts and
influencers.
– Strong written and visual communication skills, including preparing tailored materials,
presentations and official documentation for media and external audiences.
– Sound knowledge of communications concepts and ability to produce effective materials
across multiple media, including social media and multimedia content (text, photo, video,
audio).
– Experience in communication planning, including developing and implementing plans to
engage media and other external stakeholders.
– Experience in traditional and social media monitoring and analysis.
– Understanding of the multilateral/inter-agency environment and the dynamics in which
humanitarian and development organizations operate.
