Duties and Responsibilities
In February 2013, 11 nations signed the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the region, in a renewed drive to end the recurring cycles of devastating conflict in eastern DRC which impacts stability and development in the Great Lakes area of Africa. On 31 January 2014, two more countries, Kenya and Sudan, became signatories of the PSC Framework. The framework aims to help "address the root causes of conflict and put an end to recurring cycles of violence" in eastern DRC and the Great Lakes Region. In its Resolution 2098 (2013), the Security Council welcomed the signing of the PSC Framework. It called on the Special Envoy, in coordination with the Special Representative for the DRC to "lead, coordinate and assess the implementation of national and regional commitments under the PSC Framework, including through the establishment of benchmarks and appropriate follow-up measures". The Security Council further encouraged the Special Envoy to "lead a comprehensive political process that includes all relevant stakeholders to address the underlying root causes of the conflict". This position is in the Office of the Special Envoy of The Secretary-General for the Great Lakes working from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is classified as a "B" hardship duty station and a family duty station. The incumbent reports directly to the Program Manager - OSESG-GL based in Addis Ababa. The duration of this Job Opening will be six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of the assigned supervisor. This internship will be discharged in person. Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible of the following duties: 1. Implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality. 2. Contribute to the identification, analysis and interpretation of trends or patterns, using statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured sources of information and data. 3. Implement process improvement mechanisms for data analytics tasks; acquire and clean data from primary or secondary sources and maintain databases/data systems. 4. Contribute to the development of reports, dashboards or other tools to effectively summarize findings and convey information to management. 5. Track and report on progress regarding department specific data initiatives. 6. Contribute to the creation of basic data visualization outputs to aid decision-making and communications of analysis outputs. 7. Contribute to project tasks, assist with data collection and initial analysis, and report unresolved issues to senior staff. 8. Contribute to the production of data products like reports or newsletters related to data analysis activities. 9. Contribute to data collection and gathering business requirements across departments to identify pain points and support data-driven analysis. 10. Compile and clarify data insights and develop supporting materials in preparation for stakeholder communications. 11. Keep abreast of the current and emerging trends and developments in data analytics best practices, technologies, tools, etc. 12. Contribute to data collection and preliminary analysis to support the preparation and verification of data used in model assessments. 13. Contribute to activities aimed at building capacity of staff on data analytics, including trainings for staff members and other personnel. 14. Contribute to the trainings and workshops on data analytics. 15. Contribute to data preparation and preliminary analysis, support team members in data verification and routine reporting tasks, help in administrative aspects of the work plan.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: Must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in international relations, political sciences, economics, development, public administration, or other related fields; In addition, the candidate must: 1. Be computer literate in standard software applications; 2. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and 3. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
