Assignment context

The Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA), hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), works with United Nations agencies, civil society organizations and other partners to engage children and young people in sustainable development. Its freely available Challenge Badges provide teachers, youth leaders and young people with age-appropriate educational activities that encourage learning and practical action on issues such as food, nutrition, biodiversity, climate change, energy and responsible consumption.


Translating the YUNGA website and six Challenge Badges into Russian will make these educational resources accessible to a wider audience across Russian-speaking communities. The translations will support their use by schools, youth groups, educators and youth organizations, helping young people understand how global sustainability challenges affect their communities and identify actions they can take.

The Online Volunteers’ contributions will strengthen YUNGA’s multilingual outreach and support progress towards several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those concerning zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action and life on land.

Their work will help ensure that language is not a barrier to young people’s participation in sustainable development.

Task description

We are seeking 6 Online Volunteers to support us by translating the content of the Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) website and multiple YUNGA Challenge Badges on multiple topics related to sustainable development and the SDGs from English to Russian.

To this end the Online Volunteers are asked to support in translating the documents listed below, into Russian. All volunteers will be asked to ensure the translation is concise, in line with FAO communications guidelines, and fits the audience

1. Content of the Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) website (around 10 Word pages)
2. Plastics Challenge Badge (150 pages)
3. Green Cities Challenge Badge (110 pages)
4. Pollinators Challenge Badge (170 pages)
5. Energy Challenge Badge (100 pages)
6. Nutrition Challenge Badge (200 pages)
7. Food Loss and Waste Challenge Badge (90 pages)

The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the document in the original language and will receive guidance on the target audience and our communications guidelines as well as other guidance as needed.

The translation workload will be divided among the six Online Volunteers, with each volunteer responsible for approximately 130–140 pages over the 12-week assignment period. The exact allocation will be agreed upon at the beginning of the assignment, taking into consideration the length and complexity of each document.

Skills and experience

Candidates should be native in Russian and fluent in English. Familiarity with technical terms related to education, sustainable development and the environment will be considered an advantage. Previous translation experience is considered an asset.

A one-paragraph translation will be requested as part of the selection process.
