As the Secretary General’s Innovation Lab, UN Global Pulse supports responsible and inclusive innovation across the UN system. We collaborate with partners on new solutions and support the whole UN family in its transformation towards a UN 2.0.
Our work spans a spectrum of innovations using data, digital, behavioural science, strategic foresight methods. UN Global Pulse experiments and supports others in their experimentation with new capabilities and tools. Our role is not only to enable innovation but also to encourage a culture of creativity across the United Nations.
Assignment context
UN Global Pulse as Innovation Lab collaborates with relevant stakeholders to develop innovative solutions and apps to improve the work of the UN. These remote roles will support with the further development of an ongoing project on building an app for UN delegates.
Task description
The fullstack development support will provide hands-on support to contribute to the development of an existing prototype of a new app for UN delegates, over the course of August and September.
Tasks exist for multiple profiles. Deliverables are:
- Project management support (1 online volunteer): Under the supervision of the designated UN focal point, the volunteer will moderate weekly online coordination meetings, maintain a task and progress tracker, document action points and deadlines, follow up with volunteers on progress and blockers, and provide brief weekly updates to the project team.
- UI/UX and design support (2 online volunteers): Support with UI/UX development by devising wireframes with improvements of the app UX/UI, and by contributing to a design system for the app.
- Fullstack development support (3 online volunteer roles): Support with the code implementation of single tasks (e.g., code implementation of the design system, improving support for iOS/Android, fixing data quality issues, addressing issues from user testing).
- User testing support (1 volunteering role): Support with user testing sessions with internal and external users, and summarizing feedback and suggested improvements.
All volunteering roles are remote.
Skills and experience
Requirements for the different volunteer roles are:
- Project management support: Strong communications skills, with experience in software project management. Experience working with volunteers is desirable.
- UI/UX and design support: Strong understanding of UX principles and workflows, hands-on experience with relevant tools such as Figma or Claude Design, and experience with developing mobile apps.
- Fullstack development support: Strong working knowledge of React and/or Python. Experience in app development or working with the Expo framework are desirable.
- User testing support: Strong communication skills and experience with user testing for software products in an agile context.
For all roles, familiarity with UN, multilateral, or public-sector contexts is desirable.
