Full job description

Volunteer type: International
Areas of expertise: Disability, other social inclusion aspects, Emergency preparedness, crisis response, Gender, women's rights
Application deadline: 02/09/2026
Mission and objectives
UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA aims to achieve three transformative results: (1) ending preventable maternal deaths, (2) ending unmet need for family planning, and (3) ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. The work of UNFPA is based on the premise that all human beings are entitled to equal rights and protections. We focus on women and young people because these are groups whose ability to exercise their right to sexual and reproductive health is often compromised.
Assignment context
UNFPA has a history of more than 40 years in Myanmar. Since 2002, UNFPA adopted a pro-grammatic approach to support comprehensive programming on reproductive health and rights, population and data, youth, gender equality and gender-based violence (GBV). The UNV will support Outcome 3 of the current 4th country programme (2018-2025), which is “strengthened capacities to formulate and implement multi-sectoral rights-based policies and interventions that prevent and mitigate the impact of gender-based violence, especially among the marginalized, the vulnerable and young people” but also ensure gender/GBV mainstreaming in other pro-grammatic areas. To achieve this, the UNV will provide technical, operational and coordination support to UNFPA Gender/GBV programme and also GBV sub-cluster/working groups and Gender in Humanitarian Action working group which UNFPA is leading/coleading. Depending on the programme needs and security situation, mission travel to UNFPA office locations (such as, Nay Pyi Taw, Myitkyina in Kachin State, Taunggyi in Shan State, Hpa-an in Kayin State) may be requested.

Living conditions
Yangon is the busiest and most populous city in Myanmar. Yangon served as the capital of Myanmar until 2006, when the military government relocated the capital to the purpose-built city of Nay Pyi Taw in central Myanmar. With over 7 million people, Yangon is Myanmar's largest city and its most important commercial centre. Yangon boasts of all modern amenities, malls, hotels, cafes and an international/domestic airport. Yangon has reasonably reliable health infrastructure, though most expats prefer to travel to Bangkok (1 hr by flight) for anything serious.
The housing market in Yangon for expats is relatively expensive, but a wide range of options is available.
Full eligibility requirements, conditions of service and application instructions are available on the official UNV platform.
