Mission and objectives

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA), based in Pretoria, South Africa, covers 14 countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The office provides technical support to UN Country Teams, States, national human rights institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders on the promotion and protection of human rights. Within ROSA, the Early Response Team (ERT), under the Peace and Security Pillar, leads rights-based early warning, prevention, preparedness, and response to emerging and deteriorating human rights situations across Southern Africa. The ERT monitors situational developments, analyses emerging risks, and produces analytical products to inform engagement, prevention, and decision-making.

Assignment context

The ERT regularly produces regional and country-specific analytical products, including country and regional snapshots, thematic briefs, fact sheets, and other knowledge products. These products often contain analysis, key developments, risk indicators, trends, maps, statistics, recommendations, and other information that require a clear, professional, and visually engaging presentation.

Task description

Under the ERT guidance, the volunteers will:
• Develop templates and layouts for country/ regional snapshots and thematic briefs;
• Design fact sheets, notes, and other products using ERT-provided content;
• Present data through charts, maps, timelines, icons, and other visuals.
• Establish a consistent visual identity aligned with OHCHR branding.
• Create reusable and editable templates for future use.
• Format complex information for clarity.
• Incorporate feedback and deliver finalised, publication‑ready versions.
• Maintain organized source files.

Skills and experience

• Proven experience in graphic/publication design and layout.
• Strong skills in information design, visual hierarchy, and data presentation.
• Proficiency in tools such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, or equivalents.
• Ability to develop reusable templates and present information visually.
• Attention to detail, consistency, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Experience with UN or similar organisations would be an advantage.
• A portfolio demonstrating relevant design work is required.
