Result of Service
The Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant effectively contributes to the promotion, protection and realization of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly the Batwa community, in Burundi through strengthened engagement with Indigenous organizations, increased awareness of Indigenous Peoples' rights, enhanced inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human rights and development processes, and substantive support to the implementation of the OHCHR mandate and the United Nations commitment to leaving no one behind.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Human Rights Adviser (SHRA), the Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant will contribute to the implementation of the OHCHR mandate in Burundi and will perform the following duties: Undertake research, advocacy, awareness-raising, monitoring, reporting and other activities related to the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Contribute to the implementation of the OHCHR mandate and programme of work in Burundi, including activities under the OHCHR Management Plan related to Indigenous Peoples' rights. Support the ongoing work of the SHRA by engaging with Indigenous organizations, including women and youth organizations, and assisting them in capacity-building and awareness-raising activities on applicable international human rights standards. Provide substantive and technical support to promote the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human rights-related initiatives and programmes in Burundi. Support, initiate and coordinate substantive and administrative arrangements for webinars, workshops, meetings and other events related to Indigenous Peoples' rights. Assist in the development of communication and awareness-raising materials concerning Indigenous Peoples. Contribute to interim and final reports and provide advice on achievements, good practices, and relevant legal, political and factual issues affecting Indigenous Peoples. Respond to requests for information from OHCHR Headquarters regarding Indigenous Peoples' rights. Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
Completion of secondary education is required. A university degree in law, political science, international relations, human rights, or another relevant field would be an asset. Good understanding and basic knowledge of international human rights instruments and mechanisms, including those specifically related to the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Five (5) years of relevant professional experience in the field of Indigenous Peoples' rights, human rights, community development, or a related area is required. Experience in resource mobilization, communications, awareness-raising, and the development of capacitybuilding and training tools is highly desirable. Membership in the Batwa Indigenous community is highly desirable.
Languages
Fluency in French and Kirundi, both oral and written, is required; working knowledge of English is desirable.
