Duties and Responsibilities
The interns shall support the Dynamic Knowledge and Library Team, in the UN Human Rights/OHCHR Global Operations Division, Methodology, Learning, Policy and Practice Section, in fulfilling its duties, namely: to provide quality information and knowledge services and to be an effective gateway to information and knowledge in the area of human rights and, more specifically, of the work of the United Nations in the area of human rights. This Job Opening is intended to recruit three intern positions, with three different profiles: Library profile, Data Science profile, and Communications/Knowledge Management profile. The interns will support the development of the Human Rights Knowledge Gateway, where thematic knowledge hubs are hosted, contributing to research work related to those, as well as to the development of content and resources for the OHCHR intranet and knowledge hub for one or more core human rights areas of work. In addition, the interns, depending on their profiles, will contribute to specific workstreams: The intern with a communication and/or knowledge management profile will support the organization and facilitation of knowledge sharing events led by the Methodology, Learning, Policy and Practice Section, assist in the production of knowledge sharing materials and activities, such as videos, tutorials, website editing and Library guides and knowledge retention and knowledge dissemination initiatives, and assist in the development and update of Intranet and Knowledge Hub content. The intern with a Data Science profile will support the data science efforts of the Methodology, Learning, Policy and Practice Section, aiming at automating tasks as the subject classification of Library assets, tagging of websites and documents, as well as extracting and processing relevant, structured information from documents and sites. The intern with a Library profile will help in the daily management of the OHCHR Library, ensuring cataloguing and indexing tasks, research and reference queries, digitization tasks, dealing with clients and managing the physical and online collections and assist with other tasks as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) in the areas of library science, information science, knowledge management and/or a human rights, law or international relations related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above in one of those study fields AND, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period from the date of graduation.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language - Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish – is an asset.
