Mission and objectives

The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity, for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of weather extremes – work for which WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

Powered by the passion, dedication and professionalism of 18,500 staff worldwide, WFP has a presence in over 120 countries and territories to carry out its mission.

Assignment context

WFP's Internal Communications team produces a wide range of materials to inform and engage WFP staff and support Country Offices and emergency operations.

There is a need for practical, ready-to-use resources that allow WFP communications officers to produce professional communications quickly and consistently. Recurring products such as presentations, internal updates, newsletters and one-pagers can benefit from adaptable templates that reduce duplication and are easy to use.

Through this assignment, the Online Volunteers will help develop a reusable library of templates and graphic assets for different communications needs. Materials should be accessible, easy to adapt and suitable for Microsoft 365 and commonly used design applications.

Additional ad-hoc design tasks might be asked to carried out to craft content for WFP's intranet and internal communities.

Task description

WFP is looking for Online Volunteers who, under the guidance of the WFP Internal Communications team and in close collaboration with the Communications and Media Division, will provide graphic design and multimedia content support.

The Online Volunteers will receive assignments from a dedicated focal point within the Internal Communications Team. They will be onboarded through an introductory session covering WFP, communications at WFP and WFP's visual identity. Throughout the assignment, they will receive regular guidance and constructive feedback on their work. At the end of the assignment, a dedicated feedback session will provide an opportunity to reflect on the collaboration and discuss their overall contribution and development.

The Online Volunteers will develop practical, reusable and accessible communications materials that can be easily adapted by communications officers and other users. Tasks will include:

- Creating editable templates and design assets based on communications briefs
- Developing materials for Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, as well as Canva, Adobe Photoshop and other relevant tools
- Designing emails, presentations, one-pagers, digital banners and other communications products
- Adapting and improving existing templates and materials
- Ensuring materials are accessible and easy for non-designers to edit and reuse
- Developing design concepts, incorporating feedback and preparing editable source files for handover

All designs and layouts should follow WFP's corporate design guidelines, which will be shared with the Online Volunteers in advance, along with some examples.

During the assignment, each Online Volunteer will be expected to develop approximately 4–6 completed communications templates or graphic assets, depending on the complexity of the products. The specific deliverables and priorities will be agreed with each volunteer based on communications needs and the level of effort required for each product.

Skills and experience

- Candidates should have demonstrated skills or experience in graphic design, visual communication or multimedia production, with the ability to create clear, engaging and user-friendly communications materials.
