Assignment context
South Sudan continues to face a protracted and highly volatile humanitarian crisis driven by conflict, climate shocks, economic instability, and weak health systems. Recurrent flooding, sudden displacement, and disease outbreaks have severely disrupted access to essential services in hard-to-reach areas. Humanitarian needs remain highly unpredictable and are expected to persist into 2027–2028 due to climate variability, localized insecurity, and limited system capacity.
According to South Sudan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, 9.9 people remain in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with women and girls disproportionately affected. Limited access to quality health services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH), contributes to high maternal mortality, unmet need for family planning, and preventable complications. At the same time, gender-based violence (GBV) remains widespread and acute, exacerbated by conflict, displacement, and weakened protection systems.
Climate-induced shocks, including flooding in Upper Nile, Jonglei, and Unity states, continue to damage infrastructure, disrupt supply chains, and isolate communities. These sudden and recurrent shocks increase risks of GBV, including early marriage, and negative coping mechanisms, while generating urgent and unpredictable surges in demand for lifesaving SRH and GBV services. At the same time, increasing cross-border movements, including returnees and refugees, are placing additional and unforeseen pressure on overstretched systems. This underscores the need for flexible, rapid, and integrated interventions. UNFPA has a clear comparative advantage as the lead agency for SRH and GBV coordination, with strong field presence and partnerships to deliver integrated, life-saving services.
This United Nations Volunteers (UNV) assignment is part of UNFPA’s humanitarian preparedness and response project in priority states and counties which involves field program monitoring, field coordination, community engagement and Accountability to the Affected Populations.
