Assignment context
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women provides support to Member States’ efforts and priorities in meeting their gender equality goals and for building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
UN Women operationalizes this through Gender Equality Accelerators (GEAs) developed to achieve transformative results for gender equality and women empowerment. The GEAs respond to the expanded agenda for Beijing+30 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The main objective of UN Women’s support to Government under Humanitarian Action is to ensure protection, as well as equitable and safe access to and benefit from the humanitarian and development assistance to the most vulnerable, and marginalized refugee and host community women and girls. It also promotes women’s participation and leadership in the camps and host community, and women’s active role in maintaining peace and social cohesion. The main objective of UN Women’s support to Government under Peace and Security is to facilitate Women’s contribution to sustainable peace and see to it that Women contribute to and benefit from prevention of conflict and disaster.
At national level, UN Women operates based on the UN Women Strategic Note 2026-2030 which focuses on minimizing gender discriminatory norms, values and structural barriers; transformative governance fostering gender equality, equitable access to justice, human rights, sustainable peace and development; and gender responsive decent employment, resilient livelihoods and increased household incomes. This also aligns with the UN Cooperation Framework (2026 -2030), Uganda’s National Development Plan (NDP 4), the SDGs as well as UN Women’s Global Strategic Plan.

Living conditions
Kampala, the capital of Uganda and duty station for the UN Women Uganda Country Office, offers a dynamic but complex environment for UN Volunteers. The city is relatively secure, though caution is advised due to petty crime and occasional unrest. Basic infrastructure is well developed, with access to healthcare, banking, accommodation, and communication services that meet international standards. Reliable medical facilities, internet, and a range of housing options exist, especially in neighborhoods like Kololo and Muyenga. However, traffic congestion, intermittent power outages, and the need for bottled water are common. Uganda's tropical climate includes two rainy seasons, and cultural norms require modest dress and sensitivity to issues such as alcohol use. Overall, Kampala presents an enriching yet demanding assignment. Volunteers must be flexible and culturally aware, able to adapt to potential physical and social challenges. Uganda’s rich cultural landscape and natural beauty make it an inspiring duty station, but living and working here calls for stamina, patience, and a willingness to navigate both urban pressures and development complexities.
