Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women has been providing continued support to partners in Armenia to advance the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Under its 2026–2027 biennial workplan and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2026–2030 for Armenia, UN Women supports the Government of Armenia in developing and implementing National Action Plans on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and subsequent resolutions, while contributing to the achievement of nationalized SDG 5 and SDG 16 targets.
With funding support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Government of Denmark, UN Women promotes women’s full, equal and meaningful participation in peace, security and recovery processes. Through technical assistance, capacity development and multi-stakeholder partnerships, UN Women supports the implementation and localization of Armenia’s third National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security; strengthens the capacities of state institutions and civil society organizations; promotes women’s leadership and participation in decision-making; and enhances the resilience and economic empowerment of conflict-affected women. These efforts contribute to inclusive and gender-responsive peacebuilding, governance and sustainable peace in Armenia, while supporting the country in meeting its international, regional and national commitments on Women, Peace and Security.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
