OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the authority of the Director and UNESCO Representative Regional Office for East Asia in Beijing, and the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer, the Senior Driver shall provide reliable and safe driving services to the Director of Office and high-ranking UN officials and visitors and staff, ensuring the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security matters.

KEY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

More specifically the incumbent will be required to: 

• Drive the Director of Office, UNESCO/UN officials and staff, including senior and high-ranking officials and visitors.  
• Ensure provision of reliable and safe driving services.  
• Meet senior staff, officials and visitors at the airport, including assisting, when required, with basic visa and customs formalities.  
• When necessary, translate in local language for the Head/Director of the Office and/or official personnel using the vehicle. 
• Coordinate routes and, where applicable, schedule drivers and vehicle for use daily basis. May instruct other drivers in matters pertaining to traffic and safety regulations, office regulations with respect to vehicles and equipment and safety measures.  
• Coordinate arrangements for major repairs. 
• Ensure cost-savings through proper upkeep of vehicles and accurate day-to-day maintenance of vehicle(s) and/or coordination of daily vehicle logs; prepares vehicle maintenance logs and reports.  Refer to the AO/SAA problems such as abuse/misuse of equipment and vehicles. 
• Ensure availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle; keeps track of insurance and other tax formalities. Ensures timely, accurate and correct reporting of accidents. 
• Deliver and collect mail, documents and other items as required.   
• Undertake basic clerical duties such as photocopying, binding, assisting with filing, paying some office bills, etc.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

• Completed secondary, tehcnical and/or vocational school education. 
• A valid local driving licence C, with a clean driving record held for more than 5 years.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience as a driver.  

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

• Vehicle maintenance skills and basic skills in automotive mechanics.
• Excellent knowledge of Uzbek traffic laws and regulations.
• Efficiency, tact, discretion and keen observation skills in carrying out tasks and adhering to instructions.
• Availability and flexibility to meet service needs.
• Ability to work and interact effectively with individuals from diverse national and cultural backgrounds.
• Acute attention to any safety and security matters that may impact vehicle operations.
• Capacity to deliver emergency responses and ensure protocol compliance.

LANGUAGES

• Excellent knowledge of Mandarin (written and spoken). 
• Good knowledge of English.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

• Certificate in first aid.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Experience within the UN system, and international organisation or diplomatic mission.
• Experience in customs procedures and protocol.

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc. 

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 183 965 CNY.
