Assignment context

The Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA), hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), works with United Nations agencies, civil society organizations and other partners to engage children and young people in sustainable development. Its freely available Challenge Badges provide teachers, youth leaders and young people with age-appropriate educational activities that encourage learning and practical action on issues such as food, nutrition, biodiversity, climate change, energy and responsible consumption.
Preparing the layout of YUNGA publications will turn their translated and revised content into clear, engaging and accessible educational resources.

The publications need to follow the established YUNGA visual identity while presenting text, illustrations, activities and other elements in a format suited to their intended audiences. The completed materials will support their use by schools, youth groups, educators and youth organizations in different regions and language communities.

The Online Volunteers’ contributions will help YUNGA expand its collection of publication-ready multilingual resources and strengthen its outreach to young people worldwide.

Their work will support progress towards several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those concerning zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action and life on land. Clear and consistent layouts will make the publications easier to navigate, understand and use, helping young people learn about sustainable development and take practical action in their communities.

Task description

We are looking for 6 Online Volunteer/s who under the guidance of the Senior Programme Officer and the YUNGA Team, and in close collaboration with the communications team support us by producing the layout and graphic design for 16 publications.

In particular, the/each Online Volunteer is asked to:

-Review the assigned Challenge Badge content, existing YUNGA Adobe InDesign templates, branding guidelines and reference publications to understand the required layout and visual style;
- Prepare the layout of assigned Challenge Badge publication(s) in the existing YUNGA design template, ensuring consistent application of typography, colours, visual hierarchy, icons, illustrations and other design elements;
- Format text, tables, activity boxes, references, captions and other publication elements to ensure readability, consistency and a youth-friendly presentation;
- Source, adapt or place existing visual assets provided or approved by FAO, as required, while respecting FAO/YUNGA branding and copyright requirements;
- Share draft layouts with the FAO/YUNGA team, incorporate feedback and complete revisions until the publications are approved;
- Conduct final quality checks, including consistency of styles, page numbering, table of contents, cross-references, image quality, alignment and print/digital readiness;
- Provide final editable source files and publication-ready PDF files in accordance with FAO requirements;
- Coordinate with the other graphic design Online Volunteers, where needed, to ensure consistency across the full set of Zambia and Madagascar Challenge Badges.

The design/layout should follow our corporate design guidelines which will be shared with the Online Volunteers in advance. All materials will remain the intellectual property of FAO.

Skills and experience

Candidates should have professional experience in graphic design with previous experience in designing document layouts, and must have in-depth knowledge of graphic design applications, as well as good verbal and written communication skills.

A degree in graphic design or related field is considered an asset.

The candidate should be fluent in one of the following languages: English or French
