Mission and objectives

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.

Under the dual reporting line to UNV Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) and the External Relations and Communications Section (ERCS) in the Headquarters, the UNV Field Unit (FU) in China oversees all programme and partnerships initiatives and operations in China, to fulfill UNV’s strategic priorities through the engagement of empowered UN Volunteers to support the functioning of the UN System and promoting evidence-based volunteerism to be integrated by the Government of China and the United Nations system in China for implementing the 2030 Agenda.

Assignment context

The UNV-CYVA Full-Funding Partnership (UNV-CYVA Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Volunteering Programme) is jointly organized and implemented by the Chinese Young Volunteers Association (CYVA), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), and the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE). Since its implementation, the partnership has deployed over 180 Chinese UN Volunteers to serve at 29 UN agencies in over 33 countries and regions.

With the launch of the new 2026 cohort, the Project Management Office is seeking the support of Online Volunteers in translating partnership documents that are essential for smooth coordination and communication among stakeholders and in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals.

Task description

To facilitate the assignment selection for the new batch of the UNV-CYVA Full Funding Partnership -Chinese Youth Volunteer Overseas Volunteering Programme, we are seeking 12 Online Volunteers to support the Project Management Office by translating partnership documents.

To this end, 10 Online Volunteers will translate Descriptions of Assignment (DoAs) from English into Chinese. One Online Volunteer will consolidate the collected DoAs into a summary form and translate the form. One Online Volunteer will proofread the key information in the DoAs.

The deliverables are expected to include approximately 100 DoAs, as well as one consolidated form. The Online Volunteers should ensure that all translations are concise, accurate and of high quality, in line with the relevant guidelines.

The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the documents in their original language and will receive guidance on the target audience and other support as needed.

Skills and experience

- Candidates should be native in Chinese and fluent in English.
- Familiarity with technical terms related to project management and education will be considered an advantage.
- A bachelor’s degree in English, Translation, Communication, International Relations, Public Administration or other related field is preferred; a master’s degree in the above field is desirable.
- Previous translation experience is considered an asset.
- Passion to act for the promotion of volunteerism.
