Assignment context

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), through its Training and Development Section, manages the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) First Responders Programme. The programme strengthens the capacity of United Nations personnel to provide immediate lifesaving assistance to colleagues and others who suffer serious injuries or medical emergencies, particularly in locations where professional medical assistance may be delayed.

UNDSS recently launched an updated version of its Individual First Aid Kit First Responder Course (IFAK 2.1). The programme uses standardized training materials to support consistent and quality-assured delivery across the UNSMS and its global network of instructors.

To make the updated materials accessible to a wider range of personnel and instructors, UNDSS is seeking Online Volunteers to support the translation and proofreading of the IFAK 2.1 training materials from English into Ukrainian.

The materials include the Instructor’s Guide, Participant’s Guide, course presentation, assessments, Field Guide and supporting instructional materials. As these materials relate to first aid, trauma management and emergency response, accuracy and consistency of technical terminology are particularly important.

Task description

We are seeking two Online Volunteers to support the translation and quality assurance of IFAK 2.1 First Responder Course materials from English into Ukrainian.

The complete IFAK 2.1 training package comprises approximately 30,000 words across a combination of guides, session plans, presentations and supporting instructional materials.

The assignment will be divided between translation and proofreading/quality assurance.

The Online Volunteers will be asked to:
• Translate assigned IFAK 2.1 training materials from English into Ukrainian, ensuring that the translation accurately reflects the meaning and intent of the original materials;
• Review and proofread translated materials for linguistic accuracy, grammar, readability and consistency;
• Ensure consistent translation of first aid, trauma, emergency response and training terminology across the different course materials;
• Ensure that translated content is clear and appropriate for an international United Nations audience;
• Maintain, to the extent possible, the structure and formatting of the original training materials;
• Identify terminology or passages requiring clarification and consult with the UNDSS First Responders Programme team as necessary; and
• Incorporate agreed corrections and revisions into the final translated materials.

One Online Volunteer will primarily support the initial translation, while the second will primarily support proofreading and quality assurance of the translated materials. The two Online Volunteers may coordinate as necessary, with guidance and technical clarification provided by the UNDSS First Responders Programme team.

The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the original English-language materials, relevant reference materials and guidance on the intended audience and technical terminology. UNDSS will also provide clarification on first responder concepts or programme-specific terminology where required.

The final deliverables will consist of accurate and proofread Ukrainian versions of the assigned IFAK 2.1 training materials, ready for final technical review by UNDSS.

Through this assignment, the Online Volunteers will contribute to strengthening access to standardized lifesaving first responder training across the United Nations system and support the capacity of personnel working in diverse operational environments.

Skills and experience

Candidates should have excellent written proficiency in Ukrainian and a strong command of English.

Previous experience in translation and/or proofreading is highly desirable. Experience translating training, medical, first aid, emergency response, humanitarian, security or other technical materials would be considered a strong asset.

Familiarity with United Nations terminology and experience working with multilingual training or instructional materials would also be an advantage.

Candidates should demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy, consistency in terminology and the ability to work collaboratively and meet agreed deadlines.

Full eligibility requirements, conditions of service and application instructions are available on the official UNV platform.
