Mission and objectives
The UNDP Humanitarian Advisory Team (HAT) in Papua New Guinea aims to strengthen a coordinated, inclusive, principled and effective humanitarian system by supporting the Government, United Nations system, humanitarian partners and affected communities to anticipate, prepare for and respond to disasters, conflicts and other emergencies. The Team works to enhance humanitarian coordination, preparedness, information management, resource mobilization and national disaster management capacities, while promoting protection, gender equality, disability inclusion, localization, accountability to affected populations and the participation of vulnerable communities. Assignment context
Papua New Guinea (PNG) faces a wide range of humanitarian, development, peacebuilding and disaster-related challenges, including earthquakes, volcanic activity, floods, drought, disease outbreaks, population displacement, election-related tensions, and localized conflict. These events require timely, coordinated and strategic communications to protect the credibility of the United Nations, support operational objectives, combat misinformation, and ensure that affected communities receive accurate and life-saving information.
The United Nations Country Team (UNCT), under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator (RC), coordinates support to national authorities and communities in preparedness, response, recovery and resilience efforts. The Disaster Management Team (DMT) serves as the principal inter-agency coordination mechanism for emergency preparedness and response.
