Areas of expertise: Communication, advocacy, public information, Community development, Art, design, culture
Application deadline: 22/10/2026
Mission and objectives
UNFPA is the United Nations' sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights agency. Its mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA works to advance the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), placing rights, choices, gender equality, and human dignity at the center of sustainable development.
The UNFPA Strategic Plan 2026–2029 provides a roadmap for accelerating progress towards the ICPD agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals through four interconnected outcomes:
Ending the unmet need for family planning;
Ending preventable maternal deaths;
Ending gender-based violence and harmful practices; and
Adapting to demographic change through evidence- and rights-based policies.
The fourth outcome recognizes that changing population dynamics—including changes in population size, fertility, mortality, aging, migration, and population distribution—have profound implications for sustainable development, human capital, social protection, health, education, labor markets, climate resilience, and the well-being of present and future generations. UNFPA supports countries to anticipate demographic change, understand its implications, and identify rights-based policy options that enable societies to adapt and thrive.
At the heart of this work is population data, demographic intelligence, and foresight. UNFPA supports countries to strengthen population data and statistical systems, generate and analyze disaggregated data, and translate demographic evidence into national development strategies, public policies, investments, and programs. This enables governments to better understand who is being left behind, anticipate future population needs, allocate resources more effectively, and design policies that are responsive to changing population realities.
UNFPA therefore brings together its expertise in sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, youth, population dynamics, data, demographic analysis, and foresight to help countries make better-informed decisions and build more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies. Demographic intelligence is not an end in itself; it is a means to ensure that policies and investments are grounded in evidence, uphold rights and choices, and enable all people to fulfill their potential.
Innovation, partnerships, technology, and new sources of data are important accelerators of this work. UNFPA seeks to strengthen national capacities and data systems, scale effective innovations, foster strategic partnerships, and use new technologies and analytical approaches to improve the generation, analysis and use of population data and demographic intelligence.
Together, these efforts support UNFPA’s overarching ambition: to accelerate progress towards the three transformative results while helping countries anticipate and adapt to demographic change, ensuring that population dynamics and demographic intelligence inform policies, investments, and development planning—and that no one is left behind.
