Mission and objectives
The United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (UN ODET) was established on 1 January 2025, with a mandate to: (a) advise the senior leadership of the United Nations on key trends in technology, so as to guide the strategic approach taken by the Organization on such issues; (b) serve as advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, through engagement with Member States, the technology industry, civil society and other stakeholders; (c) facilitate multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on digital and emerging technologies; (d) strengthen system-wide coordination within and across the United Nations system on digital and emerging technologies; (e) support the follow-up and implementation of the Global Digital Compact (A/RES/79/1 Annex 1).
Through the Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, UN ODET also leads the implementation of the Secretary-General's vision on digital cooperation by working closely with various UN entities and multi-stakeholder groups, facilitating dialogue to accelerate global digital cooperation, seizing on the opportunities that are presented by technology - while mitigating the risks - so that progress towards achieving the Goals by 2030 can be made collectively, as well as carrying out other related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Secretary-General, including follow up actions from the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and the report "Our Common Agenda".
Assignment context
The Office is preparing for a series of initiatives in 2027, including the UN Conference on Technologies, UN Open Source Week, and the ongoing activities of the UN Open Source Workstream and its expert working groups.
The successful delivery of these initiatives depends on strong collaboration with partners from government, academia, industry, philanthropy, and civil society. To support these initiatives, the Office is seeking three Online Volunteers to provide stakeholder mapping research, proposal development support and partnership database support. The volunteers will prepare research outputs, templates and information resources that will support future partnership and resource mobilization activities undertaken by UN ODET staff.
The volunteers will work under the supervision of the Head of AI and Digital Program, in close coordination with the conference and open source workstream teams.
Task description
We are looking for 3 Online Volunteers to support partnership-related research and proposal development activities for the UN Conference on Technologies 2027 and the UN Open Source Workstream.
The Online Volunteers will work on distinct tasks and deliverables as follows:
Online Volunteer 1: Stakeholder Mapping Research for the UN Conference on Technologies 2027
The Online Volunteer will:
- Research and identify potential partner organizations from government, academia, industry, philanthropy and civil society.
- Identify organizations with an interest in digital and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, bioengineering and neurosciences.
- Compile information on identified organizations, including their areas of work, relevance to the conference objectives and publicly available contact information.
- Prioritize organizations according to their potential relevance and strategic value to the conference.
Deliverables
- One stakeholder mapping report.
- One stakeholder database .
- One recommendations note summarizing priority organizations for future engagement by UN ODET staff.
Online Volunteer 2: Partnership and Sponsorship Proposal Development for the UN Conference on Technologies 2027
The Online Volunteer will:
- Review conference objectives and supporting documentation.
- Draft partnership proposal templates.
- Draft sponsorship package templates.
- Prepare partnership engagement materials for internal use by UN ODET staff.
Deliverables
- Three partnership proposal templates.
- Two sponsorship package templates.
- One partnership engagement toolkit.
Online Volunteer 3: Stakeholder Mapping and Partnership Database Support for the UN Open Source Workstream
The Online Volunteer will:
- Research organizations active in open-source ecosystems, digital cooperation and emerging technologies.
- Identify organizations whose activities align with the objectives of the UN Open Source Workstream.
- Compile and organize partnership-related information from publicly available sources.
- Support the creation and maintenance of a centralized partnership pipeline and contact database.
Deliverables
- One research report identifying relevant organizations and initiatives.
- One partnership and contact database.
- One recommendations note identifying potential partnership opportunities for future consideration by UN ODET staff.
Skills and experience
Candidates should have strong communication, networking, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience in any of the following areas is desirable:
- Stakeholder mapping and partnership research.
- Research, analysis and report writing.
- Development of partnership and sponsorship materials.
- Information management and database organization.
- International development, technology policy, digital cooperation or related fields.
A degree in business administration, international relations, communications, marketing, public policy, development studies, technology policy, computer science or a related field is considered an asset.
Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a multicultural environment.
