Mission and objectives

Established in 1965, UNDP is the United Nations’ global development network, operating in nearly 170 countries and territories. Its mission is to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilience to crises and shocks. The Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) is UNDP’s primary knowledge and advisory center for the Europe and Central Asia region.

Assignment context

This will be done online under the supervision of a Knowledge Specialist from UNDP's Climate Policy Team.

Task description

Through the High-Integrity Carbon Markets Initiative, UNDP is working with countries and subnational jurisdictions to strengthen readiness and implementation in voluntary and compliance carbon market frameworks. Many developing economies hold significant, cost-effective mitigation potential. With the right governance and capacity, they can attract finance, meet—and even exceed—their NDC targets.

As part of this Initiative, UNDP has launched the High-Integrity Carbon Markets Toolkit, a practical resource for diverse stakeholders involved in carbon markets. This Toolkit aims to equip users with the knowledge, skills and practical guidance to engage effectively and responsibly in carbon market activities, keeping environmental and social integrity front and center.

The toolkit will eventually be made up of 7 modules, but as of now only Module 1 has been completed and published in English. Module 1 is made up of several different resources and supporting materials, including (English versions linked):
1. Part 1 – Introduction (85 PowerPoint slides)
2. Part 2 – High Integrity (64 PowerPoint slides)
3. Part 3 – Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement (203 PowerPoint slides)
4. FAQs- High-Integrity Carbon Markets Initiative (8 pages, PDF)
5. FAQs – Carbon Markets (9 pages, PDF)
6. Intro to the HCIM Toolkit (15 pages, PDF)

All resources in Module 1 have been translated into several languages including French. In turn, we require the services of a French speaker to quality assure the remaining TWO resources of translated material. These 2 resources are #3 and #6 in the list above, so 1 PPT presentation of 203 slides and 1 PDF of 15 pages.

The work is to essentially check that the translation from English is of high-quality and is consistent in language use across all the module 1 resources. This includes:
• ensuring that technical terms and concepts are accurately and consistently translated across all products; and
• ensuring that spelling, grammar, and acronym use are standardized and consistent across all products.

The translations have already been designed, so the UNV will receive the files in the same format and design as the English resources, to help with comparison and translation checking.

Skills and experience

• University degree in translation, interpreting, editing, writing, communications, linguistics, journalism, public relations, media studies or social science related field.
• At least 1 years’ experience as a translator, editor, interpreter, writer/copywriter or proof-reader preferably within the United Nations system or similar organization;
• Familiarity with climate change issues, especially NDCs is desirable, including understanding of technical matters in the areas such as the Paris Agreement.
• Familiarity and interest in carbon markets
- must be a fluent French speaker
