OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), mandated by the World Health Assembly to stop transmission of wild poliovirus, has reduced global incidence of polio by 99.9%. It is a partnership spearheaded by WHO, Rotary International, US CDC and UNICEF and supported by BMGF and Gavi. The programme supports Member States in carrying out surveillance and immunization campaigns and strengthening routine immunization, in order to stop polio transmission. The GPEI website www.polioerdication.org serves to inform internal and external stakeholders on the global work of the GPEI programme. It is managed and maintained by WHO. The WHO staff member will work closely with the resource mobilization and communications team to manage web site content and structure to serve as web manager, and further develop technical content solutions for the website. The work will require engaging with WHO staff across the department and in other departments, and with vendors and GPEI partners.
 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Website design:

  • Regularly collaborate and consult with internal stakeholders on ensuring functionality responds to their needs; carry out external stakeholder surveys.• Propose and facilitate the development of any design elements required.Guide and collaborate with web vendor for any technical and design updates needed.•

  • Ensure interactive polio map remains functional and up to date.

Website Management:

  • Manage the GPEI website and the polio page on the main WHO website ensuring content is current, accurate and well displayed while remaining in line with the programme's brand andmission.

  • Liaise with IT department for registration of domains, adherence to legal factors, internet security and other elements including purchases and renewal of web certificates.

  • Manage relationship with web vendor, negotiate contracts while adhering to the web budget and ensuring web solutions align with programmatic needs.

  • Conceptualize, test and launch new web pages and sections within the capacity of the Content Management System (CMS).

  • Collaborate with the Global Communications group and country focal points to implement web content strategies that meet programme objectives.

  • Develop and implement effective search engine optimization (SEO) and keyword strategies across the site.

  • Ensure country pages are up-to-date in accordance with latest IHR classifications and regulations.

  • Coordinate with the polio data team and finance team to provide accurate and current polio cases and finance information on the website.

  • Anticipate the programme's website needs and provide input and solutions to complex presentation of data and information.

  • Through the collection of statistics and user analysis, monitor assess and report on the performance of digital communication activities during the financial reporting periods.

  • Conduct regular page audits to fix broken links, respond to web queries and resolve website issues.

Content creation and social media management:

  • Collaborate with relevant focal points to ensure website content is relevant and meets the partnership's communication needs and objectives.

  • In collaboration with the data team, prepare and publish the weekly polio case updates and programme headlines.

  • Contribute to developing and editing the programme's monthly newsletter - Polio News.

  • Draft and edit news stories and other communication texts and materials when needed.

  • Regularly publish content on the programme's WHO/Polio account including a weekly polio case graphic and summary.

  • Provide digital guidance to the communications team and respond to digital and social media-related queries and requests.

  • Stay up-to-date on current digital and social media trends and explore opportunities to add value to the programme's digital presence.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
     

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A first level university degree in communications, information systems or relevant field.
Desirable: Advanced degree in one of the previous areas.
 

Experience

Essential: 

  • At least 5 years of digital communication experience combined in developing country and in humanitarian organizations at global level. 
  • Demonstrated international exposure.
  • Website management experience in a global health programme including developing technical solutions related to programme information (content, analytics and data visualization).
  • Experience working in a public private partnership in the health sector and having an established network of key communication stakeholders at global and regional levels.
  • Experience in countering misinformation on disease vaccination by creating targeted and informative communication messages.
  • Experience managing and working with external web service providers.


Desirable: 

  • Good understanding of the epidemiology of poliomyelitis, serotypes of the virus and the vaccines used in fighting the disease plus experience in preparing country information updates in accordance with IHR classifications.
  • Life experience in country with weak health infrastructure and knowledge of issues related to access to vaccines in a developing country.
     

Skills

  • Ability to assess data and infographic needs of external audiences and work with technical staff to find solutions for presenting dynamic infographics and maps for non-technical audiences.
  • Good knowledge of search engine optimization and ability to create metrics to measure impact of priority content.
  • Understanding of vaccine-preventable diseases and sensitivity to contexts of vaccine hesitancy and political/social tensions.
  • Ability to mine, analyse and integrate disease data onto a website and other communication materials.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 71,335 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4976 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
