Mission and objectives

The United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (UN ODET) was established on 1 January 2025, with a mandate to: (a) advise the senior leadership of the United Nations on key trends in technology, so as to guide the strategic approach taken by the Organization on such issues; (b) serve as advocate and focal point for digital cooperation, through engagement with Member States, the technology industry, civil society and other stakeholders; (c) facilitate multi-stakeholder policy dialogue on digital and emerging technologies; (d) strengthen system-wide coordination within and across the United Nations system on digital and emerging technologies; (e) support the follow-up and implementation of the Global Digital Compact (A/RES/79/1 Annex 1).

Through the Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, UN ODET also leads the implementation of the Secretary-General's vision on digital cooperation by working closely with various UN entities and multi-stakeholder groups, facilitating dialogue to accelerate global digital cooperation, seizing on the opportunities that are presented by technology - while mitigating the risks - so that progress towards achieving the Goals by 2030 can be made collectively, as well as carrying out other related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Secretary-General, including follow up actions from the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and the report "Our Common Agenda".

Assignment context

UN ODET maintains several websites providing information on digital cooperation, artificial intelligence governance and other initiatives. To make this information more accessible to global audiences, UN ODET is expanding its multilingual web content across all six official UN languages.

UN ODET is seeking five detail-oriented Online Volunteers to review and refine AI-assisted website translations from English into Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish. Each volunteer will focus on one language, helping ensure translations are accurate, natural and suitable for publication.

Task description

Under the guidance of ODET's Communications Manager, each Online Volunteer will review AI-assisted translations from English into one assigned target language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish.

The Online Volunteer will:

- Review and refine AI-assisted translations of selected webpages against the original English content, ensuring accuracy, clarity, readability and completeness.
- Ensure translations follow established United Nations terminology, editorial standards and language conventions.
- Cross-reference official UN terminology and previously translated documents, including General Assembly resolutions, reports and other relevant publications, to ensure consistency with established wording.
- Consult UNTERM and other authoritative United Nations resources when verifying technical, institutional or policy-related terminology.
- Review headings, navigation labels, institutional names, acronyms and other website text for consistency and completeness.
- Flag ambiguous source wording, translation discrepancies or terminology requiring further clarification.
- Maintain a brief record of significant terminology decisions and outstanding translation questions.
- Provide finalized translations in shared documents for internal review and publication.

Each Online Volunteer is expected to review and refine approximately 25-30 priority webpages, or an equivalent volume of website content, in their assigned language over the 12-week assignment. Specific webpages and delivery milestones will be agreed at the beginning of the assignment.

Deliverable:

One consolidated, publication-ready set of reviewed translations for the assigned language, covering approximately 25-30 priority webpages or an equivalent volume of content.

The consolidated deliverable will include:

- Reviewed and refined translations of the assigned website content.
- Consistent application of established UN terminology and language conventions.
- A brief record of significant terminology decisions and any outstanding translation questions.
- Final consolidated translations ready for ODET's internal review and publication.

Each Online Volunteer will produce this single consolidated deliverable for their assigned language.

Skills and experience

- Excellent written proficiency in at least one of the five target languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish, together with strong English comprehension.
